Yes, your internet subscription can follow you to a new home, provided your provider serves the new address and you give it three to five weeks' notice. If not, leaving is free after six months of contract, through Easy Switch. Recorded on 4 October 2026 from the official pages of Proximus, Orange and VOO.
Can you keep your internet subscription when you move?
Yes, when your provider's network reaches the new address. It is then a line transfer: the contract, the price and the commitment stay the same, only the connection changes. VOO sums it up well by distinguishing three operations: moving (your services go from one address to another), installation (a new subscriber) and takeover (another account holder at the same address).
The condition is geographic, not contractual. A provider that is not present where you are moving simply cannot follow you.
When should you notify your provider, and by what date?
Three weeks at the latest, five if you want some margin. The closer the moving date, the fuller the engineers' diaries, and a line that is not ready on day one is rarely fixed within forty-eight hours.
Here is the countdown calendar for a move fixed for 1 December 2026, calculated from the notice periods published by each provider.
| Provider | Published notice | Last useful day to notify |
|---|---|---|
| Proximus | 5 weeks recommended | 27 October 2026 |
| Orange | 3 weeks, 6 if the address never had the cable | 10 November 2026, or 20 October |
| VOO | 3 weeks (2 to 3 according to its presentation page) | 10 November 2026 |
| Telenet | 3 weeks, 6 if the cable has to be laid (indirect source) | 10 November 2026, or 20 October |
Nicolas's own calculations from the official pages of Proximus, Orange and VOO recorded on 4 October 2026. The Telenet row comes from a comparison site, its official page being unavailable that day: confirm it in My Telenet.
Orange confirms the request by email within two working days, after a form in the customer area.
How much does transferring the line cost at each provider?
Between zero and a few tens of euros, with one real variable: whether a cable exists at the address. The figures circulate badly, and some comparison sites still show €59 for Proximus while its official page says otherwise.
| Provider | Transfer | Engineer or option | If the address was never connected |
|---|---|---|---|
| Proximus | Free self-installation if the situation allows | €79 outside the Flex+ pack, cabling beyond 20 m at €5 per metre | Fibre availability checked separately, activation date sometimes to be adjusted |
| Orange | Free | €30 for a 5 pm to 8 pm or Saturday slot, €59 if the appointment is cancelled the day before or missed | Delay extended to 6 weeks |
| VOO | Free if included in the subscription | Extended slots chargeable | €90 first connection, cable free up to 10 m |
Recorded on 4 October 2026 from the official pages of the three providers. Telenet is not included: no verifiable price on its official page that day.

What if the provider does not serve the new address?
Change provider, and do it through Easy Switch rather than cancelling by hand. The procedure hands the cancellation to the new provider, which activates its services before cutting the old ones. Our guide to switching provider without downtime details the timeline.

The cost depends on how long the contract has run, as the FPS Economy explains: after six months, cancellation is free and needs no reason; before that, you owe the balance up to month six.
| Your situation | Rule that applies in principle | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Provider present at the new address | Line transfer | Report the move 3 to 5 weeks ahead |
| Absent, contract older than 6 months | Free exit | Easy Switch with a new provider |
| Absent, contract younger than 6 months | Balance up to month six | Ask in writing for a goodwill gesture |
| New-build or street never connected | First connection charged | Ask for the quote before accepting, allow 6 weeks |
| Outgoing tenant keeping their line active | Activation postponed | Have the date adjusted, never cancel beforehand |
No clear text makes moving a ground for free exit before six months. Write anyway: the missing-network argument is worth making.
Why do two neighbouring streets not have the same providers?
Because the provider you can subscribe to depends on the wholesale network deployed at the address: Proximus, Fiberklaar or Wyre for fibre (FTTH, fibre to the home), or the cable. A household leaving a Proximus street for a Fiberklaar street will not necessarily find the same catalogue.
At Proximus, fibre installation is entrusted to a partner contractor that changes with the region: Fiberklaar in Flanders, Unifiber in Wallonia, GOfiber in the German-speaking community (recorded on 20 September 2026). Check the arrival address with our guide to fibre availability before fixing anything, or on the Fiberklaar site.
Wallonia, Brussels, Flanders: three maps, three catalogues
Moving from one region to another is the case where the subscription almost never follows. Telenet, for example, is mainly present in Flanders and Brussels, while VOO and its cable cover Wallonia and Brussels. Proximus is everywhere.
Fibre complicates the map. In mid-2026, around 78 % of homes can be connected in Brussels, 71 % in Flanders and 44 % in Wallonia, figures that keep moving and that the BIPT atlas (the Belgian Institute for Postal Services and Telecommunications) lets you cross-check address by address. A Brussels resident moving to a Walloon village should therefore expect VDSL or cable where they had fibre.
Do you keep your landline number and email address when you move?
The email address, yes, provided you ask. Article 121/1 of the Act of 13 June 2005 requires it to be kept free of charge for eighteen months, but the request must be made before the subscription ends.
The landline number is trickier. The usual rule, to be checked with the provider, is that a geographic number only follows within the same area code: Brussels (02) to Brussels, yes, to another area code, often not. Ask for it in writing when you report the move.
Should you take the modem and the TV box with you?
Yes. Orange and Proximus say so in black and white: only the network distributor stays in the home, while the modem, the TV box, the cables and the remote go with you.
Should you use the move to change deal?
Sometimes, and it is the best moment to ask the question. An internal transfer generally does not reset the price, whereas a change of provider opens access to new-customer promotions, along with the thirteenth-month increase that follows them. Our analysis of the fibre price after the promotion shows how to compare over twenty-four months rather than on the headline price, and our ranking of the best fibre deals applies that rule.
A contract older than six months can be left free of charge: if an offer at the arrival address is better, nothing obliges you to transfer the old one.
Five checks before reporting the move
- Is the arrival address served? Test it with your provider before any step, and with the others in parallel.
- How long has the contract run? Six full months, free exit. Before that, a balance is due.
- Does the home already have a socket or a cable? Without them, allow six weeks and first-connection fees.
- Who will be present on installation day? An adult, and access to the building.
- What equipment are you taking? Modem, TV box, cables, remote and any rented Wi-Fi boosters.
