On a fiber plan's brochure, only one number is printed large: the download speed. It is the one that impresses — 1 gigabit, 2 gigabits — and it is also the one that matters least as soon as you stop merely consuming content. Upload, the upstream speed, is the decisive figure for video calls, cloud, file transfers and live streaming — and it ranges from 20 to 500 Mbps across Belgian fiber plans, often for an identical download. Here is what each provider actually offers, what you need, and how to check it. Figures recorded in July 2026.
What is upload speed, and why does it matter so much?
Upload is how fast your connection sends data to the internet, while download measures what it receives. As long as you are watching a series, reading email or browsing, only download is working. The moment you speak on a video call, your phone syncs its photos, you drop a file into a shared space or you stream live, upload carries all the traffic.
The imbalance between the two is historical. Consumer networks were built for an internet of consumption, where the subscriber receives a lot and sends little. Since remote work went mainstream, the cloud became ubiquitous and content creation moved into the home, that assumption has aged badly. The average Belgian household now sends vastly more data than it did ten years ago — and this is precisely the line in the contract nobody reads. What upload speed does each Belgian provider offer in 2026?
The gap is striking: from 20 Mbps to 500 Mbps depending on the tier, sometimes within the same provider. Here is the snapshot of the market in July 2026, plan by plan — subject to what is actually available at your address.
Proximus, the main FTTH player, scales upload across its range: about 20 Mbps on the entry-level fiber plan (100 Mbps down), 100 Mbps on the mid tier at 500 Mbps, and 200 Mbps on the Giga plan that climbs to 2 Gbps down. The provider also offers a genuinely symmetric 500/500 Mbps option, as fast up as down.
Telenet, whose subscriber base still runs mostly on coaxial cable in Flanders and Brussels, has raised the upload on its ONE, All-internet and WIGO subscriptions to around 30 Mbps, with download lifted to 500 Mbps. In the areas where the Wyre fiber network is deployed — Ghent, Antwerp, Mechelen, Kortrijk, Aarschot and Genk among others — the provider does sell symmetric 500/500 Mbps.
Orange covers Wallonia and Brussels mainly through the former VOO cable network it acquired. Its Giga plan advertises 1 Gbps down for 50 Mbps up: that is the structural ceiling of coax, and it does not depend on the provider's commercial goodwill. Where Orange resells FTTH fiber, upload follows the tiers of the underlying network.
Digi, which entered the market by undercutting everyone, sells FTTH plans advertised as symmetric — Fiber Essentials at 500 Mbps for around €10 a month, Fiber Max at 1 Gbps around €15, Fiber Ultimate up to 10 Gbps around €20 — but on still very limited coverage, concentrated in a handful of municipalities. The cheapest symmetric fiber in Belgium does exist; you just have to live in the right place.
Why does cable cap upload at 30 or 50 Mbps?
Because coax was never built to send data back up. Originally, this network distributed television: almost its entire spectrum was allocated to the downstream signal, toward the subscriber. The return path, added later for two-way internet, occupies a narrow band at the bottom of the spectrum — and that physical constraint has not gone away with successive generations of the DOCSIS standard.
This explains a figure that looks absurd at first glance: a cable plan at 1 Gbps down capped at 50 Mbps up, a ratio of twenty to one. FTTH, by contrast, carries light in both directions over a dedicated fiber, without that structural imbalance: symmetric is technically natural there, and is limited only by the provider's commercial policy. The DOCSIS 4.0 standard promises to rebalance cable with several gigabits upstream, but its arrival in Belgian consumer plans is still years away. How much upload do you actually need?
Far less than the premium tiers suggest. The uses that draw on upload remain, taken individually, very light on bandwidth.
A Zoom call in 720p takes about 1.2 Mbps up, and around 1.8 to 3 Mbps in 1080p. Microsoft Teams states 2.5 Mbps for optimal video quality, Google Meet around 3.2 Mbps for HD with several participants. A background cloud backup consumes between 1 and 3 Mbps continuously. The heaviest item is live streaming: to stream 1080p on Twitch in good conditions, the rule is to stay under 70 to 80% of your upstream speed, which calls for roughly 8 to 10 Mbps of available upload.
Now add up a real household: two simultaneous video calls, a phone syncing photos, a console uploading a save, a NAS sending its nightly copy. You land around ten megabits, rarely beyond twenty. So 20 to 30 Mbps covers the vast majority of domestic situations, and 100 Mbps keeps even the busiest households in the clear. That is partly why cable's 50 Mbps is enough for so many subscribers — until the day a large volume has to go out at once.
How long does it take to upload 10 GB?
This is where the gap becomes tangible. For a 10 GB transfer, in theory and with no overhead: about 1 hour 10 minutes at 20 Mbps, 27 minutes at 50 Mbps, 14 minutes at 100 Mbps and under 3 minutes at 500 Mbps. In practice, add 20 to 30%: network protocols, encryption and the destination service take their share.
Those durations change nothing about a day of video calls, but they transform the day of a photographer delivering a shoot, an editor sending rushes, or a freelancer running a first full cloud backup. That is exactly the profile for which symmetric pays off — and it is also why upload weighs heavily in our selection of plans for remote work.

How do you measure your real upload speed?
With a speed test, but run properly — otherwise you are measuring your Wi-Fi, not your line. Plug the computer into the router with an Ethernet cable, close any apps consuming bandwidth in the background (cloud sync, downloads, streaming) and run the test. Wi-Fi, especially far from the router or on older equipment, drags the measurement down through no fault of the line.
Then repeat the exercise at several times: during the day, then in the evening around 8 p.m. On coaxial cable, capacity is shared between homes on the same neighbourhood segment, and the gap between off-peak and peak is revealing. On FTTH, the line is dedicated and the result should stay stable. Is it worth paying more for symmetric fiber?
Only if you send as much as you receive — and that is rarer than people think. For a household that streams, browses and takes a few video calls a week, 20 to 30 Mbps of upload will never register as a limit. Paying a monthly premium for symmetric would mean buying capacity that stays unused, while the same budget would do more against the price after the promo, which weighs far more heavily over twelve months.
If, on the other hand, your work consists of producing and sending — full-time video calls, content creation, large files, hosted backups, live broadcasting — symmetric removes a bottleneck that no amount of download will ever offset. The good news on the Belgian market in 2026 is that symmetric is no longer a premium privilege: between Proximus's 500/500 Mbps option, Telenet's Wyre fiber zones and the FTTH plans from Digi, it can now be found at prices sometimes below those of cable plans far more limited upstream.
In short, upload is the most honest number on a fiber plan: it says what the network can really do, where download flatters. In Belgium it draws a clear line between cable — stuck between 30 and 50 Mbps by the physics of coax — and FTTH, where it depends mostly on the commercial tier you choose. Compare it systematically alongside the price after the promo, measure your own over Ethernet rather than Wi-Fi, and remember that the best upload is not the highest one, but the one that matches what you actually send.
